Killer Pipeline Must be Tested before Use, Feds Say

LCG, Aug. 24, 2000--The El Paso Natural Gas Co. pipeline that exploded in New Mexico last Saturday, killing 11 members of two families, must be thoroughly tested before it is put back into use, an agency of the federal government ordered yesterday.

In its order, the U.S. Office of Pipeline Safety said the conduit must undergo pressure tests, be X-rayed and receive ultrasound structural testing before it can be used. The order also applies to two other pipeline located nearby.

National Transportation Safety Board investigators at the site of the explosion are reported to have found corrosion in a section of the pipe that failed Saturday, but the NTSB says it will be months before it can issue a report on the cause of the explosion.

Twenty-five-year-old Amanda Smith, the sole survivor from the party of 12 that went camping last weekend along the Pecos River, not far from Carlsbad Cavern National Park, remained in critical but stable condition at University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas. The explosion and fire claimed the lives of her parents, her two children, her husband and her in-laws.
