Attorney General Asks Regulators to Cut Con Edison Rates

LCG, Aug. 25, 2000--New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer said at a news conference yesterday that he had asked the state Public Service Commission to "immediately" return the electricity rates of Consolidated Edison Co. of New York to last years levels.

Yesterday morning, Spitzer said he had "filed an action" against Con Edison and would announce the details at a news conference in the afternoon. Those were the details.

"Last summer was one of the hottest on record, this summer is one of the coolest, yet Con Ed's bills are up by 30 percent and more," the states top cop complained. He said the "action" he had filed was a petition asking regulators to roll back the rates while it was acting on an earlier request he made to deny the utility authority to pass changes in its purchased power costs through to ratepayers.

If the commission doesnt act on his request, he said, he will ask the legislature to remove the regulators authority to deregulate the electric industry. "They will react quickly," he predicted, adding he expects a reply within a week.

He got a reply within minutes. PSC Chairwoman Maureen Helmer, in a statement released later in the afternoon, accused the attorney general of "political grandstanding" and noted that Spitzer "is already a party to the PSC's ongoing discussions examining Con Ed's rates and seeking additional money for the ratepayers."

" It would be nonsensical for us to address his petition prior to the conclusion of the current proceeding to which he is already a party," she said.
