Orion Power to Boost Output at NYC Plant

LCG, Sept. 5, 2000Orion Power Holdings said on Friday it had filed preliminary paperwork with New York regulators for plans to repower the Astoria Generating Station it purchased from Consolidated Edison Co. of New York.

An Orion subsidiary, Astoria Generating Co., would replace four large (and old) boilers with natural gas-fired turbines. If approved, the work will increase Astoria's output by 750 megawatts.

"Upon completion of the repowering project, the Astoria Generating Station, which currently is capable of producing 1,090 megawatts of electric power, will produce approximately 1,840 megawatts," said Liam Baker, Orion manager of asset development. "Moreover, air emissions and East River water usage will be substantially reduced from current levels."

Orion said it expects the conversion to require an investment of about $750 million. If approved, the changeover would be done in two phases, coming on-line in mid-2004 and late 2005.

Orion Power Holdings is a subsidiary of Constellation Energy Group Inc. and sister company to Baltimore Gas & Electric Co.
