Con Edison Breaks Ground for New Hampshire Plant

LCG, Sept. 15, 2000Consolidated Edison Inc. said yesterday that a subsidiary had held a groundbreaking ceremony in Newington, N.H., for a new 525 megawatt power plant that will go into service in 2002.

Newington Energy LLC, an ad hoc affiliate of Consolidated Edison Development Inc., will be a natural gas-fired, combined-cycle facility occupying 40,000 square feet, or a little less than one acre, Con Edison said. It will provide enough electricity for more than 700,000 New England homes.

"This new plant will provide power to thousands of homes in the region in an environmentallysound operation," said Stephen B. Bram, chairman of Con Edison Development. "The Newington plant will help satisfy growing energy needs, bolster the local tax base, and contribute to a competitive energy environment in New Hampshire."
