Indiana Township Considers 800 Megawatt Proposal
LCG, Sept. 20, 2000Benton Township, a community near South Bend, Ind., has scheduled four public meetings to learn if its citizens want to go forward with a proposed merchant power plant that would cost between $300 million and $400 million to build.<>P>William Martin, president of CME North American Merchant Energy, announced the project yesterday afternoon at the Benton Harbor offices of Cornerstone Chamber of Commerce. He then explained the project last night to the Benton Township board of trustees.CME hopes to build an 800 megawatt, natural gas-fired plant in an industrial park. Martin said the project would employ up to 300 skilled workers during construction and provide about 25 full-time jobs once completed. Commercial operation could be achieved by 2003.Martin said the output of the plant would be sold into the regional wholesale electricity market and would be delivered over transmission lines owned by American Electric Power Co.The site preferred by CME is in a so-called "Renaissance Zone," meaning the power plant's owners would pay no real estate or personal property taxes. However, Martin pointed out, the plant would purchase 4 million to 6 million gallons of water daily from the city of Benton Harbor and would have a $2 million annual payroll.
