Irish Government Power Auction Begins Friday

LCG, Sept. 20, 2000An auction of electricity generated by Ireland's state-owned Electricity Supply Board will begin on Friday, according to the Irish power regulator.

Tom Reeves, Commissioner for Electricity Regulation, said it was important for the auction to proceed rapidly in order for supply contracts to be negotiated by November 1, an essential step to opening the Irish electricity market to competition.

Reeves said he had hoped to complete the auction, which was originally slated for May, by the end of this month. The process was delayed by an action in Ireland's High Court brought by EPower, a new electricity supplier, which complained that regulations favored some new power producers who are expected to bid for ESB power in order to begin selling electricity while their own plants are being built.

Reeves said allowing future suppliers to bid for ESB power was a necessary incentive for them to participate in a liberalized market.
