EPA Announces Proposed Rule Action to Revise ELG's and Support Reliable, Affordable Coal-fired Power Plants

AEP May Step Up Cook Unit 2 Restart

LCG, Sept. 28, 2000--Officials at American Electric Power's Cook nuclear power plant in Michigan told the Nuclear Regulatory Commission yesterday that the 1,020 megawatt Cook Unit 1 remains on schedule for restart in the first quarter of 2001, though things are going well enough that the date may be moved forward.

Both units at the plant were shut down for safety reasons in September 1997. The 1,090 megawatt Cook Unit 2 was returned to service last June and has been operating smoothly, according to AEP. "The good performance of Unit 2 during this first 100-day period can be attributed to our focus on safety and quality during the rigorous restart effort," said Bob Powers, senior vice president for nuclear operations.

Powers said the restart of Unit 1 could be moved forward from its present schedule and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has been alerted to that possibility. "Many variables may yet affect the restart schedule," he said, "But we believe it is prudent to ensure that everyone is prepared in the event an early restart is feasible. In any event, our focus will continue to be safety and quality."

AEP met with NRC officials well into yesterday evening to discuss the restart schedule and the agency's new reactor oversight process.
