LCG, October 28, 2025--NextEra Energy and Google yesterday announced two agreements that will help meet growing electricity demand from artificial intelligence (AI) with clean, reliable, 24/7 nuclear power and strengthen the nation's nuclear leadership. First, Google signed a new, 25-year agreement for power generated at the Duane Arnold Energy Center, Iowa's only nuclear power facility. The 601-MW boiling water reactor unit was shut down in 2020 and is expected to commence operations by the first quarter of 2029, pending regulatory approvals to restart the plant.

LCG, October 23, 2025--Google announced today a first-of-its kind agreement to support a natural gas-fired power plant with carbon capture and storage (CCS). The 400-MW Broadwing Energy power project, located in Decatur, Illinois, will capture and permanently store its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. By agreeing to buy most of the power it generates, Google is helping get this new, baseload power source built and connected to the regional grid that supports our data centers.

Cleco, Calpine in 20-Year Fuel-for-Power Deal with Aquila
LCG, Oct. 23, 2000--Cleco Corp. and Calpine Corp. announced jointly on Friday they have signed a 20-year contract with Aquila Energy, a subsidiary of UtiliCorp United Inc., for 580 megawatts of the output of their 1,000 megawatt Acadia Power Project currently under construction in Acadia Parish, La.Calpine and Cleco Midstream Resources each have a 50 percent interest in Acadia Power Partners, which owns the 1,000 megawatt combined-cycle plant. Construction on the unit began in July and is on schedule for completion by June 2002.Under the arrangement, called a "tolling agreement" in the trade, Aquila Energy will supply the natural gas needed to generate 580 megawatts of electricity and will own and market the produced power. The agreement goes into effect July 1, 2002.Cleco is the holding company for the former Central Louisiana Electric Co., the utility that started out as an ice house in 1914. The ice house had a 50 kilowatt generator to run its refrigeration equipment and sold a little power on the side. By 1934, that had grown to be Louisiana Ice & Electric Co. and the rest, as they say, is history.
