PG&E Unit Plans 550 Megawatt Eastern Oregon Plant

LCG, Nov. 9, 2000--PG&E Corp. said yesterday a subsidiary has filed an application with the Oregon Office of Energy to build a new generating station in north-central Oregon's Umatilla County, adjacent to an operating power plant in Hermiston.

PG&E's National Energy Group filed plans for a 550 megawatt Umatilla Generating Project. Construction of the natural gas-fueled, combined-cycle facility would begin in early 2002 with commercial operation expected in 2003.

The plant would be built on a site adjacent to the Hermiston 474 megawatt plant which PG&E owns jointly with PacifiCorp. Much of the "infrastructure" is already in place, the company said.

"Based on our experience in siting and building the Hermiston Generating Plant five years ago, we are very familiar with the Oregon siting process and its focus on building consensus among the stakeholder groups," said Roger Garratt, lead developer for the project. "We have already begun meeting with a number of interested parties, including representatives of the local community, and we look forward to continuing the effort. "
