Faster-than-Expected Data Center Load Growth May Cause Increased Regional Short-term Fossil Fuel Generation and Wholesale Electricity Prices

LCG, March 18, 2026--The EIA released a new "In-depth Analysis" of the potential impact of faster-than-expected near-term growth in data center power demand on power generation and wholesale prices on March 12. The analysis models the lower 48 states through 2027 and compares results to its base case scenario. Key takeaway from this sensitivity analysis is the potential increase in fossil fuels in some regions and potentially a significant increase in wholesale prices in ERCOT.

Weather Shuts Down Chernobyl - It May be the End

LCG, Nov. 27, 2000--The one working reactor at Ukraine's notorious Chernobyl nuclear power plant tripped off line this morning when snow, ice and wind caused transmission line failures, signaling a drop in demand to the reactor's control systems.

Energoatom spokeswoman Nadiya Shumak said the plant shut down at 6:00 a.m. following a failure or electricity lines connecting the plant with the city of Vynnytsya, about 100 miles southwest of Kiev.

Vadim Hyrshchenko, acting director of the Ukrainian nuclear regulator, said Chernobyl might stay shut down. Operators plan to restart the reactor on Saturday, but Hyrshchenko asked "Is it worth our while restarting the reactor if it will only work for a few days before being turned off forever?"

The winter weather brought misery to millions of Ukrainians whose electricity failed when the country's transmission grid was unable to stand up to snow, ice and wind. Nearly half of all homes in portions of western Ukraine were without power.
