Reliant to Build 800 Megawatt Pennsy Power Plant

LCG, June 21, 2001Reliant Energy Inc. said yesterday it plans to build an 800 megawatt power plant near Gettysburg in south-central Pennsylvania. The company expects to begin construction later this month with commercial operation penciled in for mid-2003.

Reliant said the merchant plant will consist of three natural-gas-fired units and be built adjacent to its 60 megawatt Hunterstown facility in Straban Township.

Joe Bob Perkins, president and chief operating officer of Reliant Energy Wholesale Group, said "We will preserve land for other uses by developing an existing electric power generation and distribution site, and we will install emission controls and burn only natural gas, which will make the plant one of the cleanest and most efficient of its kind in the country."

The facility will incorporate three General Electric combustion turbines, a heat recovery steam generator, a steam turbine and an air-cooled condenser. Reliant said use of an air-cooled condenser will minimize the need for water, for which the plant will depend on on-site wells.

Reliant said the plant will operate as a base load facility, running throughout the year during periods of moderate as well as high demand.
