Brazil Car Makers Get Increases in Power Quotas

LCG, July 9, 2001Brazilian carmakers will get relief in the amount of power they are ordered to save under the nation's energy rationing, the government's power crisis task force said on Friday.

The automakers production dropped 16 percent last month as they struggled to get by on 20 percent less electricity than in May. Even so, Brazilian automobile production is on track for a bumper crop of 1.9 million new cars in 2001.

General Motors, which had reduced power consumption at its Brazilian plants by the required 20 percent, will get its restriction cut to 10 percent.

"August has more working days than other months and it is hard to save energy," said a GM spokesman. "We are importing generators that would produce more power to compensate for the reduction after August."

Also affected are the Brazilian operations of PSA Peugot-Citroen of France and Japan's Honda, but the amount of their reductions was not immediately available.

Brazil also eliminated power reduction requirements for companies that make equipment for generating electricity.
