Calpine Adds 350 Megawatts at South Carolina Plant

LCG, Sept. 6, 2001--Calpine Corp. said yesterday it has commissioned a 350 megawatt expansion of its Broad River Energy Center in Gaffney, S.C., bringing the peaking facility up to 890 megawatts of capacity.

Carolina Power & Light Co. has agreed to buy the entire output of the plant under a long-term contract, Calpine said. The first 540 megawatts, consisting of three combustion turbines, began commercial operation in June of last year. Two more combustion turbines were added in the expansion.

Bob Alff, senior vice president and head of Calpine's eastern region, said "We are extremely pleased to have an additional 350 megawatts of capacity available in time to help meet peak summer demands on the CP&L system."

Alff pointed out "This represents another strong step forward in our development of a diversified generating portfolio in the dynamic Southeast power market."

Including the Broad River expansion, Calpine currently operates 1,200 megawatts of combined base load and peaking capacity in the Southeast, in addition to 3,500 megawatts currently under construction and 2,700 megawatts in advanced stages of development.
