Texas to get a Whiff of Electric Dereg Tomorrow
LCG, July 30, 2001One out of 20 retail electric customers in Texas will be eligible to start receiving power from an alternative service provider beginning at 12:01 tomorrow morning, as the state begins a pilot program to get ready for full deregulation next January 1.Originally set to begin June 1, the pilot program has been delayed by computer problems. At least one alternative service provider, and an environmentally friendly one at that, thinks the wait was worth it.Eleanor Scott, a spokeswoman for Green Mountain Energy, said "We think waiting until all the systems are ready will let us provide good customer service."Good service without California's problems, is the promise of Texas industry officials. They point to recent commissioning of several new power plants in the Lone Star State as insurance against soaring prices and rolling blackouts. In Texas, and everywhere else but Sacramento, an insufficiency of supply in California is seen as the cause of that state's problems. In California, the high power prices and rolling blackouts are blamed on energy companies from Texas.
