Northwestern Reaches Agreement on Montana Air Quality

LCG, Oct. 10, 2001--Northwestern Corp. said yesterday it has reached an agreement with the Montana Environmental Information Center, Missouri River Citizens Inc. and individual petitioners to settle challenges to an air quality permit for a new power plant near Great Falls.

The settlement was coordinated by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality, which had earlier decided to issue the air quality permit.

Under the agreement, the company will speed up installation of emission controls on the 240 megawatt, natural gas-fueled project, and will fund and develop an energy conservation program for low-income families in Montana.

" We stated from the time we announced the project that Northwestern would work with all parties to assure that Montana First Megawatts would benefit all Montanans," said Mike Hanson, president and chief executive of Northwestern Services Group. "Under this agreement, Northwestern will accelerate the installation of certain emission-reduction technology that will make it one of the cleanest operating electricity generators in the state."

Hanson said the new facility could begin producing electricity by July 1 of next year.
