LCG, February 20, 2026--The EIA today issued an "in-brief analysis" that estimates U.S. power plant developers and operators plan to complete a record installation of 86 GW of new, utility-scale electric generating capacity that is connected to the U.S. power grid in 2026. Last year, 53 GW of new capacity was added to the grid, which was the largest capacity installation in a single year since 2002. Thus the estimate of 86 GW of new capacity in 2026 is a whopping 33 GW greater than the year prior. It should be noted that over 20 GW of the 86 GW of new capacity this year is estimated to be completed in December.

Mirant to Buy TransCanada's Gas Marketing Unit
LCG, Oct. 12, 2001--Atlanta-based power producer Mirant Corp. said yesterday that it has agreed to buy the gas marketing business of TransCanada Pipelines Ltd. for an undisclosed sum. The deal will propel Mirant into the number two slot among north American gas marketers.Mirant has agreed to acquire TransCanada's trading and marketing business and related natural gas storage and transportation contracts, along with its so-called "netback pool," which markets supply from 550 Canadian producers.The sale takes TransCanada out of the marketing and trading end of the energy business. The company has sold $3.3 billion in Canadian money ($2.1 billion U.S.) worth of assets over the past two years in order to focus on its pipeline and electric generation businesses in North America.Mirant said the deal would make it Canada's largest gas marketer in addition to giving it the number two spot in North America.The companies expect to close the transaction by the end of this year, pending regulatory, producer and customer approvals.
