U.S. Renewables Conference set for California

LCG, Nov. 1, 2001--Interior Secretary Gale Norton and Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham will host a conference in Pomona, Calif., November 29 on the future development of solar, geothermal wind and biomass on public land.

The idea for the conference, which is expected to attract armies of renewable energy experts, came from a recommendation by Vice President Dick Cheney in his May National Energy Policy report that federal agencies re-evaluate the potential for energy development on federal property.

"President Bush's national energy plan promotes conservation, diversifies our energy supply and increases the variety of fuel sources we use -- all keys to reduce our dependence on a single type of fuel," Norton said. "We need coal, oil and natural gas, but we also need wind, solar, geothermal and biomass power."

The conference will be held at the Los Angeles County Fair Complex, and the site selection was a disappointment to Nevada lawmakers who had hoped the summit would be held somewhere in Nevada. The Department of the Interior is landlord to 83 percent of Nevada's land, but Norton has yet to visit the state.

"Certainly, I'm disappointed the summit is not in Nevada," said Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., who along with Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., asked Norton to host the summit in the state. Reid was less disappointed. "I don't care where the conference is held," he said. "California has potential, too."
