Alberta Okays AES 525 Megawatter for Calgary

LCG, Dec. 12, 2001--The energy regulator for the Canadian province of Alberta yesterday approved plans by AES Corp. of the United States for a 525 megawatt natural gas-fueled power plant to be built on the outskirts of Calgary.

A smattering of "not in my backyard" opposition had objected to the plant, but the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board said several conditions attached to its approval of the $450 million Canadian ($287 million U.S.) plant effectively addressed those concerns.

"The board is satisfied that the health and safety of the local community has been safeguarded through the design and operational features of the plant and the strict compliance with provincial environmental guidelines and board requirements," the regulators said.

Among the conditions imposed on AES are providing a continuous monitoring of wind speed and wind direction along with emissions of oxides of nitrogen and drafting an emergency response plan. AES will also have to set up a monitoring program for biochemical contaminants and provide quarterly reports on all of the measures.
