NRC Okays Power Boosts at Dresden, Quad Cities

LCG, Dec. 27, 2001--The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said yesterday it has approved a request by Exelon Generating Co. to increase the generating capacity of four of its nuclear reactors at two former Commonwealth Edison Co. nuclear power plants in Illinois.

Exelon Generating is a unit of Chicago-based Exelon Corp., which is itself the product of the merger between ComEd and Peco Energy Co.

The NRC-approved power uprates will bring the capacity of each of the reactors to about 912 megawatts. The increases represent a 17 percent boost for Dresden Units 2 and 3 near Morris, Ill., and 17.8 percent for Quad Cities Units 1 and 2 near Moline, Ill.

The NRC said its safety evaluation of the requested power uprate for the units focused on several areas, including nuclear steam supply systems, instrumentation and control systems, electrical systems, accident evaluations, radiological consequences, operations and technical specification changes.

The NRC staff determined that the licensee could safely increase the power output of the reactors with modifications to plant equipment and use of new fuel.

Exelon said units application that it plans to begin immediately with Dresden Unit 2 and put the uprates for the other three reactors into effect next year and in 2003.
