Northern California Natural Gas Prices to Drop
LCG, Dec. 28, 2001--Pacific Gas & Electric Co. predicted yesterday that natural gas prices in Northern California will be 72 percent lower next month than they were last January, dropping from $1.41 per therm a year ago to $0.39 per therm next month. For the average residential customer of PG&E, the plunge in gas prices will mean a drop to $48.38 on the monthly gas bill, from $121.92 in January of this year."For the first time in many months, prices are beginning to stabilize and are more reflective of natural gas costs during the past five years," the company said in its news release.Because almost all of the electricity generated in California is from natural gas-fueled power plants -- either older gas-fired boiler operations or newer gas turbines -- the price of power is also expected to decrease.
