Arizona Merchant Plant Construction Underway

LCG, Jan. 23, 2002--The Mesquite generating station is the second largest merchant plant now being built in Arizona.

Sempra Energy Resources, a subsidiary of Sempra Energy, is developing the plant, which is expected to have the first block of its overall capacity online by the middle of 2003. The combined-cycle plant will consist of two combustion turbines and a steam turbine, and is expected to produce at maximum output by early 2004. Each of the two blocks will be rated at 625 megawatts.

The Mesquite plant is located in southwestern Arizona, near Arlington. The other, largest merchant power plant being built in the state is the Gila River plant, which should be rated at 2,300 megawatts.
