Severe Weather Causes Major Outages in Britain and Ireland

LCG, Jan. 29, 2002--Electric service and transportation were severely disrupted by winds of hurricane force that affected northern Britain and Ireland Monday. Automobile accidents were caused by 100 mph winds, and trucks blown over by the wind caused major highways to be closed.

Heavy traffic was made worse by the cancellation of rail service by ScotRail. Electricity was out in over 40,000 homes in northern Scotland, and outages were also reported in the central portion of the countryside, as well as in the Irish Republic.

No sailing was permitted across the Irish Sea between Stranraer and Belfast. Flood warnings were issued at 12 locations by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency. The English Midlands, Lake District, Buckinghamshire, and Wales were given 23 flood warnings. The weather led to seven fatalities, according to emergency services.
