Japanese Nuclear Waste Reprocessing Center Discovers Leak
LCG, Feb. 1, 2002--At a nuclear waste reprocessing center in Aomori Prefecture, Japan, a pool used to store spent nuclear fuel has apparently released at least 5,000 liters of water over the past six months.According to Japan Nuclear Fuel Ltd., which operates the facility in Rokkasho village, no danger exists to the surrounding environment. The leakage occurred in the main part of the center where reprocessing is scheduled to take place starting in July 2005.The pool's contents were transferred to an adjacent container that could hold the roughly 165 tons of spent fuel. The pool in which the leak was detected is being checked in order to see where repairs may be necessary. The facility will continue to accept fuel from nuclear plants throughout Japan.
