Ontario to Restart Nuclear Plants
LCG, Feb. 13, 2002--Six existing nuclear reactors in Ontario will be restarted beginning in the second half of 2002, through 2004.Ontario Power Generation (OPG) and Bruce Power own plants that were shut down in 1997 and 1998 for safety and reliability repairs. Ontario Hydro originally owned the Pickering station, at which four units are already operating. OPG will restart another four, older units at Pickering for $1.5 billion ($943 million US). The units will be brought online, according to OPG, at the rate of one every six months beginning in the third quarter of 2002.Bruce Power's Bruce "A" station will restart two of four units by the summer of 2003, which will represent 1,500 megawatts of additional capacity for the province. The additions will take place under restructured, competitive power markets which are scheduled for May 1. OPG's decision to restart Pickering units was made after consideration of the alternative of buying power from coal-fired or gas-fired plants under U.S. or Canadian ownership.OPG's president and chief executive Ron Osborne said that the two nuclear stations would be "the most economic source of large-scale generation in the province."
