TransAlta Plant Expansion Approved

LCG, Feb. 14, 2002--TransAlta received approval from the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board Tuesday to double the capacity of the Keephills plant, 44 miles west of Edmonton.

The board said that the coal-fired plant can be expanded from two operating units to four, based on the condition that environmental design supports improved emission performance as regulations become more strict. TransAlta plans to consider whether it will move ahead with construction, and reach a decision regarding Keephills in the second quarter.

If the expansion took place, it would add 450 megawatts to Alberta's capacity by 2005. Generating companies in Alberta have complained that plant construction in Alberta's central area, where Keephills is located, is deterred by the lack of transmission infrastructure to the southern part of the province.
