Coalition of Religious Leaders Advocates Conservation

LCG, Feb. 26, 2002--The leaders of Christian and Jewish religious organizations involved in an "Interfaith Climate and Energy Campaign" have written letters to all members of the Senate calling for more conservation as the Senate debates a national energy policy.

The campaign includes signatories with affiliations including United Methodist, Presbyterian, United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, Greek Orthodox, Episcopal, American Baptist, Lutheran and Catholic bishops of major metropolitan areas. The letters include measures for "energy conservation, fuel efficiency, and alternate energy development to protect God's creation and God's children."

The Rev. Dr. Robert Edgar, general secretary of the National Council of Churches stated, "we're telling the Congress that energy conservation is necessary for homeland security as well as environmental protection and justice. Lives are at stake here." Rabbi Eric Yoffie, president of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations stressed renewable technologies such as "sun, wind, water and the human ingenuity to devise clean, safe technologies."

The two-year, 21-state campaign stems from the organization National Religious Partnership For the Environment, whose founding partners include the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life, the U.S. Catholic Conference, the National Council of Churches of Christ, and the Evangelical Environmental Network.
