LCG, June 23, 2025--The Governor of New York today directed the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to develop and construct an advanced nuclear power plant in upstate New York to deliver zero-emission power that supports a reliable and affordable electric grid. NYPA will lead the effort to develop at least one new nuclear energy facility with a combined capacity of at least one gigawatt (GW) of electricity, either alone or in partnership with private entities. The directive builds on the Governor’s 2025 State of the State to develop nuclear energy plans in New York.

Chicago Sewer Repair Leads to Large Gas Outage
LCG, Feb. 28, 2002--Following the accidental rupture of a gas line on Chicago's Southwest Side Tuesday, over 4,500 residences, schools and businesses had their gas supplies turned off.Sewers Commissioner John Roberson said that a crew working on a sewer line had been trying to retrieve an abandoned cast-iron pipe. When they did so, they "accidentally clipped the (gas) line."Gas escaping from the line was ignited by propane heaters that were being used by the crew, which caused a fire, with flames reportedly leaping 60 feet. No one was seriously hurt by the blast.Environment Commissioner Marcia Jimenez hoped to determine why People's Energy, the gas company, required three and one half hours to shut off all valves to the gas main. Two mains were shut off after gas still appeared to be leaking from the line. It was later discovered that the first main to be shut off had continued to leak gas due to a valve not being completely closed.1,600 customers were expected to have gas restored by midnight Wednesday, and People's Energy estimates the rest will have gas again by Friday. Most residents have remained at home or stayed with friends or relatives. This has been one of the "colder weeks of the year" even before the disruption.
