South Korean Electricity Workers End Unsuccessful Strike

LCG, April 3, 2002-After an unsuccessful attempt to prevent South Korea from privatizing its electricity market, public workers ended their illegal five-week strike yesterday.

Korean energy ministers said that there would be "zero possibility" of anything other than privatization and plan to divide and sell the Korean Power Corporation (Kepco) .

In exchange for a government promise to "work together," union leaders ended the strike, but this agreement is vague and the strike may be resumed if nothing more concrete comes of the reconciliation.

South Korea intends to split Kepco into five parts, in addition to privatizing rail and gas.
