U.S. Coal-fired Generating Capacity Retirements in 2025 Are Less Than 20 Percent of Retirements in 2022

LCG, April 13, 2026--The EIA today released an "In-brief Analysis" of U.S. coal-fired generating capacity retirements in 2025. A highlight of the analysis is that, during 2025, the electric power sector retired 2.6 GW of coal-fired generating capacity at four power plants, which is (i) the least since 2010 and (ii) 5.9 GW less than the planned retirement of 8.5 GW at the beginning of 2025.

EPA Proposes Rule Changes to Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) Requirements to Restore American Energy Dominance

LCG, April 10, 2026--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced yesterday a rule proposing several revisions to the federal regulations governing the disposal of coal combustion residuals (CCR) and the beneficial use of CCR. The EPA designed the rule to encourage resource recovery, allow for site-specific considerations in permitting, and provide regulatory relief while continuing to protect human health and the environment. The EPA will be accepting comments on the rule for 60 days after publication in the Federal Register, and it will also hold an online public hearing on the rule.

Edward M. Gleason, vice president, treasurer and corporate secretary of Alliant Energy, will retire on March 31. Gleason started with Wisconsin Power and Light Company in 1977 as assistant treasurer, and moved into his present posts following the 1998 merger with Alliant Energy. Thomas L. Hanson has been promoted to vice president and treasurer, effective following Gleason's retirement. F.J. (Jack) Buri has been named corporate secretary, also effective April 1.

Roy Lewis Eiguren has been nominated to the board of directors of Avista Corp. Eiguren is a senior partner at the law firm of Givens Pursley LLP, and will stand for election at the company's annual meeting in May. Eiguren worked as Special Assistant to the Administrator of the Bonneville Power Administration, U.S. Department of Energy before entering private law practice in 1984.

George E. Wardeberg has announced his retirement as vice chairman of Wisconsin Energy Corp. in April 2002. Prior to WEC's acquisition of WICOR, Inc., in 2000, Wardeberg was chairman and chief executive officer of the latter company. Wardeberg will continue to serve on WEC's board of directors.

Carla D. Brockman has been appointed assistant corporate secretary by the board of directors of OGE Energy Corp. Brockman, who has been with the company since 1980, served as client manager in the strategic planning department beginning in 1998.
