Nevada May Remove Cap Connected With Renewables

LCG, Mar. 22, 2002--The chairman of the Nevada Public Utilities Commission has proposed revising a rule that has so far capped the cost that utilities and energy retailers can pass to customers in meeting minimum state requirements for renewable generation.

As part of Senate Bill 372, passed last year, satisfying renewable power requirements with wind, photovoltaics, geothermal and biomass was allowed to add no more than 0.05 cents per kilowatt hour in 2003 and 2004.

The decision by the chairman, Don Soderberg, was in response to a group of six assemblymen and six senators, that found that the cap was not intended as part of the law. Public hearings on the proposed rules will take place on May 6, with a vote by the PUC set for May 8. The group of legislators, the Legislative Commission, will then review the PUC ruling.

Nevada electric utilities are required to supply 5 percent of their customers' requirements with renewables in 2003, with annual increases to reach a 15 percent requirement by 2013.
