Ukraine Struggling to Complete Nukes

LCG, May 1, 2002-Ukraine is waiting for international assistance to close the Chernobyl plant and built replacement generation.

On Monday, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe asked Western nations to implement the 1995 agreement to provide funding in order that Ukraine decommission the Chernobyl station and build two new reactors.

Chernobyl was shut down permanently in 2000 and the reactor was encased in a sarcophagus, which is reportedly suffering from sizeable gaps. Experts worry about radiation leaks, and Ukraine has been waiting for assistance to complete disassembly.

Two western Ukraine reactors, at Rivne and Khmelnitsky, also lay unfinished, as the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development postpones a dlrs 215 million loan.

Ukraine's government has asserted it requires dlrs 1.5 billion, while Russian specialists have said between dlrs 500 and 600 million. However, no money has been given as yet.
