Vancouver Plant Comes Online

LCG, May 7, 2002--Calpine Corp. has announced that a natural gas-fired plant has come into operation.

The 230 MW combined-cycle Island Cogeneration facility is located on Vancouver Island, near the Campbell River. British Columbia Hydro & Power Authority has a 20-year contract to purchase power from the plant.

The plant also has a 20-year agreement to supply about 90 tons of steam hourly to the Norske Canada pulp and paper mill.

Calpine, which purchased Island Cogeneration from Westcoast Energy Inc. in September of 2001, reports that this form of natural gas-fired generation is 40 percent more fuel efficient than older gas-fired plants.
