U.S. Coal-fired Generating Capacity Retirements in 2025 Are Less Than 20 Percent of Retirements in 2022

LCG, April 13, 2026--The EIA today released an "In-brief Analysis" of U.S. coal-fired generating capacity retirements in 2025. A highlight of the analysis is that, during 2025, the electric power sector retired 2.6 GW of coal-fired generating capacity at four power plants, which is (i) the least since 2010 and (ii) 5.9 GW less than the planned retirement of 8.5 GW at the beginning of 2025.

EPA Proposes Rule Changes to Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) Requirements to Restore American Energy Dominance

LCG, April 10, 2026--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced yesterday a rule proposing several revisions to the federal regulations governing the disposal of coal combustion residuals (CCR) and the beneficial use of CCR. The EPA designed the rule to encourage resource recovery, allow for site-specific considerations in permitting, and provide regulatory relief while continuing to protect human health and the environment. The EPA will be accepting comments on the rule for 60 days after publication in the Federal Register, and it will also hold an online public hearing on the rule.

Green Mountain Power Corporation nominated Nordahl L. Brue chairman. Brue, who has served as company director since 1992, will take the place of Thomas P. Salmon, who has held the position for 19 years.

AES Corporation has selected Mark Fitzpatrick to serve as Chief Executive Officer of Electropaulo, a Brazilian energy distributor. Fitzpatrick previously served as Executive Vice President in charge of operations in Europe and Asia.

AES has also appointed Ann Murtlow President and Chief Executive Officer of Ipalco, an Indianapolis utility. She has served previously as Managing director of AES Horizons and was in charge of developments throughout Central and Eastern Europe.

PPL Generation has appointed Bryce L. Shriver to the post of senior vice president and chief nuclear officer. Shriver's addition to the company comes as Robert G. Byram retires from the position after serving for five years.

Reliant Resources Inc. has brought in Stephen Naeve to take the role previously played by Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Steve Ledbetter. Naeve will serve as company president, although Ledbetter will remain chairman and CEO.
