NY Short-Circuit May Cause Summer Troubles

LCG, May 22, 2002-A major Long Island Power Authority transmission line has short-circuited.

Crossed wires in a 3 mile underwater part of the line probably caused the problem in the 18-mile transmission line, which connects Oyster Bay and Westchester County by way of the Long Island Sound.

If the problem is in the underwater portion and requires replacement transmission, the line may not be serviceable until after the peak-demand summer months, posing a significant problem for LIPA and power officials. According to LIPA chairman Richard Kessel, keeping the transmission line up may be the biggest pre-summer challenge that LIPA has ever encountered.
