Florida's New Gas Pipeline Is Operational

LCG, May 29, 2002--A natural gas pipeline running from Alabama across the Gulf of Mexico to the Florida shore near Tampa Bay has begun operations.

The Gulfstream pipeline had first been proposed by Coastal Corp., based in Houston, but was bought by Williams Co., which stopped pursuit of having its own pipeline to populous Pasco County. The Federal Trade Commission spurred the sale when it saw the possibility of Coastal acquiring an interest in Florida's existing pipeline following a corporate merger. The new pipeline is the second to supply Florida with natural gas in 40 years.

Customers for the gas, which flows 430 miles along the bed of the Gulf of Mexico and shallower waters of Tampa Bay, include power producers Florida Power & Light, Florida Power and Calpine Corp. The two local utilities and independent have power plants in Manatee, Kissimmee and Polk counties, respectively.

The St. Petersburg Times quoted analyst Michael Heim of A.G. Edwards & Sons as saying, "It's a needed pipeline. It should be beneficial to consumers." The older Florida Gas & Transmission pipeline runs entirely on land down the Panhandle. Further extension of the Gulfstream line is possible in the fall to the area around Palm Beach, 150 miles away from Osceola County.

Although the U.S. Department of Commerce raised the issue of possible detriment to commercial and recreational fisheries affected by the pipeline, it is possible that 130,000 tons of limestone rock meant to replace coral will attract small fish, which in turn attract larger ones.
