LCG, June 17, 2002-T-he Nuclear Energy Regulatory Commission gave Duke Energy and Dominion Resources preliminary approval to extend the operating licenses of the Catawba and North Anna plants.

Dominion's 40-year licenses for units One and Two of North Anna will, if officially approved, be extended to April 2018 and August 2020 respectively. The Virginia plant provides 1,842 MW of capacity.

NRC also gave preliminary approval to Duke Energy Corp. for its Catawba nuclear plant, located in South Carolina.

The 2,258 MW plant will likely have its license extended to December 2024 and February 2026 for units One and Two.

NRC is willing to give the extensions based on environmental impact assessment, and the Commission is leaving environmental impact statements open for public comment until August. The closing date for input is August 23 for the Catawba plant and August 1 for the North Anna plant.
