FPL Completes New York City Peaker
LCG, July 8, 2002--A new peaking plant developed by FPL Energy has started selling power to the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) from the Rockaway Peninsula, just east of the New York City borough of Brooklyn. The gas-fired Bayswater Energy Center has an installed capacity of 54 megawatts, with construction having begun in December 2001. FPL Energy president Ron Green said, "We're pleased that the Bayswater Energy Center is now fully operational and able to support LIPA's energy needs for the Rockaways just in time to meet increased demand this summer." The plant's output is under long-term contract. The Rockaway Peninsula is connected by the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge to the rest of the Queens borough. Cross Bay Boulevard, on the northern span, enters the marshes of Jamaica Bay, which were first developed for residential and recreational use in 1939. An alternative plan would have made the area a huge industrial port.
