Heat Wave in Northeast May Trigger Blackouts

LCG, July 29, 2002-Weather in the Northeast is predicted to yield temperatures over 90 degrees all week long, to the detriment of electricity service.

Air conditioning in the summer is about a third of total electricity use in the region.

Transmission and power plant construction has not kept up with population growth in New York City and Connecticut, and the limited supply in these areas might bring brownouts or blackouts this week. The forecast for New York City is 96-97 degrees.
