India Federal Power Secretary Says Country Should Wait to Deregulate Energy
LCG, September 12, 2002-According to the Press Trust of India, India's Federal Power Secretary has said that the country should wait at least ten years to deregulate its electricity industry.Power Secretary R.V. Shahi said that the lack of balance between demand and supply, an unfortunate condition that prevails in India, mandates that deregulation wait. Many regions of the country suffer from regular blackouts or receive no power at all, and much of the power produced is also stolen. Shahi is confident of a future when supply matches demand more closely, but he believes deregulation now will only lead to more chaos. An International conference will be held in New Delhi this October addressing energy regulation in developing countries.
