AEP Business Unit Split Approved by FERC
LCG, Sep. 27, 2002--American Electric Power Co. (AEP) will seek approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission to separate its regulated and unregulated business units, after the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission allowed the plan, according to the company. The plan is meant to allow the company to meet requirements under legislation in Ohio and Texas, both states where transmission and generation functions must be separate. AEP said in a press release that having the units as distinct entities would make activities in the separate companies more transparent to investors, and allow each to raise capital more efficiently. The Securities and Exchange Commission's chairman, E. Linn Draper Jr., said he is "optimistic" about the prospects for approval from his agency, and thinks the proposed move can be finalized by the end of the year.
