PG&E Awarded First Civil Nuclear Credit from DOE to Support Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant

LCG, August 14, 2026--The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced today that it has awarded Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) $271 million to help support the extended operations of the company's nuclear power facility, Diablo Canyon Power Plant, which is located near Avila Beach, California. The federal Civil Nuclear Credit Program (CNCP) funding will allow the 2,240-MW nuclear facility, which supplies nearly ten percent of the electricity consumed by the state's population, to continue to safely generate secure, carbon-free, baseload power to customers. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approved 20-year license extensions on Diablo Canyon’s two reactors last April.

New Long-term Power Supply Secured by Hydro-Quebec

LCG, Oct. 4, 2002--Hydro-Quebec today announced it had selected a bid from two companies to supply 1,200 megawatts of power over a twenty-year period, starting in 2007.

The selections by the utility, worth C$6 billion ($3.76 billion US), will require approval by the Quebec Energy Board, and are due to be followed next year by requests for further supply offers. The agreements would be signed with Groupe Axor Inc. and Calpine Canada Power Corp., which together will operate a gas-fired generating unit in Varennes, close to Montreal.

Hydro-Quebec is also prepared to generate power at its Robert-Bourassa LG-2 generator, a baseload unit, and the LG-1 unit, which will be dispatchable. The utility's sales of power are 156 Twh in the current year, and are scheduled to grow to 165 TWh by 2005. "We will need 1.2 to 1.3 terawatt hours more of electricity per year as of 2006," commented Yves Filion, the president of Hyddro-Quebec's distribution unit.
