Mexico Cuts Energy Funding by 25 Percent

LCG, October 8, 2002-The budget approved by Mexico's Congress allows for $1.5 billion less that what iss necessary for maintenance, operation, transmission, and distribution of electricity.

Mexico's Federal Electricity Commission, or CFE, along with representatives from state power distributor Luz y Fuerza de Centro (LFC), requested that legislators reinstate the state company's funding.

The Congress gave $8.5 billion to energy, although $10 billion was requested, and officials insist that fuel alone will cost $5 billion.

Energy officials insist that 20 percent less revenue than expected, or $400 million, was received from ratepayers because of electricity theft and lowered demand.

Mexico owns about 40,000 megawatts of capacity and expects a yearly growth in electricity demand of 5.6 percent.

Other issues currently being discussed between legislators and Mexican energy officials include nuclear plant safety, pollution from aging plants, hydroelectric dam-induced flooding, and a joint Mexico-Guatemala hydroelectric plant project.
