FERC to Reevaluate U.S. Gas Supply
LCG, October 15, 2002-On the 25th of this month, FERC will conduct a public conference on natural gas.U.S. dependence on natural gas is growing, especially because of the large number of newly constructed natural gas-fired power plants. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is intent on addressing domestic and imported supply, in addition to prices and regulation.According to FERC Chairman Patrick Wood, the current gas supplies in the U.S. will not be sufficient for the expected demand of 2012.Another consideration is the construction of a pipeline through Canada to transport natural gas from Alaska. Companies have been considering building such a pipeline for some time; legal and financial problems have prevented the pipeline from being built.Other issues to be discussed at the October 25 meeting include natural gas from the Gulf of Mexico and liquefied natural gas importation.
