New York PSC Approves Power Lines

LCG, Feb. 24, 2003--Con Edison Co.will be allowed to install two 138-kV power transmission lines and a substation in Westchester County, the New York State Public Service Commission stated in an order last Friday.

The lines will run underground, from the town of Greenburgh's Eastview substation to Mount Pleasant, where the new substation will be sited on land currently owned by the county. The utility intends to purchase the land, and the lines will be placed along established rights-of-way, to start operations by May 2004.

In order to begin construction, Con Edison will need approvals from the county. The county has an incentive to grant them, in that four substations now in the county will likely be unable to handle the increasing demands put on them. Substations allow power from higher-kV transmission lines to be converted to a voltage suitable for lower-kV lines, before distribution to homes and businesses.
