Winter Storm Cuts Power to Southeastern States
LCG, Feb. 28, 2003--Snow and freezing rain that fell yesterday in part of North Carolina and Virginia caused power outages affecting nearly 400,000 people through this morning. The process of restoring power is being counteracted by the storm's continuation into today, with roads and power lines becoming coated in a thick layer of ice. Temperatures remained below freezing as the rain fell. Most of the customers who have lost power are in northern North Carolina, with about one-third of those in Winston-Salem."We've got a generator to power the radios and dispatch equipment, but that's about it," Jimmy Flythe, a district manager for public and business relations with Duke Power, told Dow Jones Newswires from an operations center in Lewsville, N.C.. Last night, Winston-Salem's Adam's Mark Winston Plaza Hotel was full to capacity, with over 600 rooms occupied.Despite the severity of the storm, it has not affected as large an area as did a storm in December, which caused outages to 2 million customers, largely in the Carolinas.
