El Paso Corp. Settles for $20 Million over Reported Trades

LCG, March 27, 2003After a federal investigation, the electricity trading subsidiary of El Paso Corporation has agreed to pay $20 million.

El Paso Corp.s Merchant Energy will pay $10 million now and $10 million over a three years, according to the settlement made with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. However, the corporation continues to deny that it participated in illegal activities.

El Paso first allegedly discovered the reporting of a false trade in November of last year. Later, the company announced finding several additional false or inaccurate price reports but also noted those responsible were no longer employed with the company.

Other corporations have faced scrutiny for similar manipulative reporting allegations. Dynegy settled for $5 million in December over allegations that its traders had reported inaccurately. Williams Cos., CMS Energy, and American Electric Power Co. have also reported finding fake trades during internal investigations.

El Paso Corporation is the countrys largest natural gas company. Its trading unit Merchant Energy is slated to be shut down as the company is reorganizing and selling off some of its assets.
