Faster-than-Expected Data Center Load Growth May Cause Increased Regional Short-term Fossil Fuel Generation and Wholesale Electricity Prices

LCG, March 18, 2026--The EIA released a new "In-depth Analysis" of the potential impact of faster-than-expected near-term growth in data center power demand on power generation and wholesale prices on March 12. The analysis models the lower 48 states through 2027 and compares results to its base case scenario. Key takeaway from this sensitivity analysis is the potential increase in fossil fuels in some regions and potentially a significant increase in wholesale prices in ERCOT.

Bowie Power Station Receives Last Environmental Permit

LCG, Mar. 31, 2003--An air quality permit has been granted to a planned 1,000-megawatt power plant being developed by the SouthWestern Power Group in Bowie, Arizona.

The permit is the first of its kind issued by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) in three years, and is the final such permit necessary before construction of the Bowie plant can begin. Other permits included the Aquifer Protection Permit last year. The Bowie plant will use wet cooling, and will minimize the use of water by zero liquid discharge. Evaporative cooling will keep efficiency relatively high even during hot summer temperatures.

The configuration of the plant is to be combined-cycle, with two phases planned. The first 500 megawatts should be installed beginning this year, with operation in late 2005. The second phase is expected to come online in 2006.
