Isabel Cuts Power to 5.5 Million

LCG, Sept. 19, 2003--Residents of North Carolina on Thursday sustained the first battering by Hurricane Isabel, which also caused disruption and harm in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Rhode Island and the nation's capital, with an estimated 5.5 million people losing power through Friday.

The 120-mile-long barrier island chain in North Carolina known as the Outer Banks lost power, as did 1.6 million people in Virginia. It was estimated that power would be restored in Dominion Virginia Power's service territory within a few days. President Bush ordered that federal aid monies be allotted to North Carolina and Virginia.

Winds of over 100 mph struck North Carolina Thursday, but gradually lost speed through Friday, when Isabel, downgraded to a tropical storm, was clocked at about 35 mph. A number of Mid-Atlantic states, which experienced a relatively wet summer, have sustained flooding and resultant water damage. The amount of rainfall varied, with West Virginia recording 5 inches of rain, and Delaware, one to two inches. In Maryland, flooding caused by rain and storm surges along the ocean was called the "No. 1 danger" by Gov. Robert Ehrlich. One-and-a-quarter million residents of the state were calculated to have lost power.

Today, it was reported today by Canadian Broadcast News that 30,000 customers of Hydro One, which distributes electricity to Ontario residents, had lost power due to failed distribution lines. The storm was still pounding the area this afternoon.
