San Francisco Power Plant Expansion On Hold

LCG, Nov. 11, 2003--Power developer Mirant Corp. has requested that the California Energy Commission cease review of the company's applications to install new turbines and emission control equipment at an existing site in San Francisco.

Mirant, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this past summer, has decided that building 540 megawatts of new capacity is not a priority, given its ailing financial health and the state of the power markets in general. Company spokesman Kevin Loscotoff stated, "We're stepping back to evaluate the highest and best use of future generation projects at Potrero."

Mirant purchased the Potrero site, which is 38 years old, from Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) in 1998. Mayor Willie Brown later allowed for the upgrade of Potrero under the condition that the Hunters Point plant would be shut down in the year that the new 'Unit 7' began operation, projected to be 2005. Some local residents of the Hunters Point neighborhood were opposed to both the expansion as well as the continued operation of Hunters Point on health grounds, although the operation of the Potrero plant would have emitted less pollution than the Hunters Point plant.
