Morgan Stanley Can Buy Duke Power Contracts

LCG, Jan. 20, 2004--The sale of contracts by Duke Energy Trading and Marketing, a unit of Duke Energy Corp., to Morgan Stanley Capital Group has received approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

The deal, which includes interests in 241 contracts, would cover short-term and long-term contracts. The sale also would move Duke Energy Corp. nearer to dissolving the Duke Energy Trading and Marketing unit, a joint venture with Exxon Mobil Corp. The unit would retain at least some of its portfolio of contracts.

Duke spokeswoman Kate Perez said that Duke continues to trade using its generating assets. Although Duke Energy North America, the merchant unit, is preparing to sell unspecified plants in the Southeast, the company has plants throughout other regions of the country.
